In 1815, something quite extraordinary happened. The first geological map of Britain was published, and it was all the work of one person, William Smith. He used vivid colours and shading techniques to illustrate the different layers of rock in England, Wales and southern Scotland – thus creating a work of art as well as of scientific value.

As well as adding splashes of colour to an explorer’s room or study, the print is a great talking point – and might get you thinking about the ground beneath your feet.
